neal and jack and me

i love this song. the vamp on the chorus at the end with those soaring tony levin bass notes underneath - the layered guitars - the plaintive vocals - this is prog at its best.

which leads me to the question - do you have a favorite KC era? are you strictly a giles/sinfield fan, or do you require lake, or wetton? is it KC without bruford? do you prefer david cross or eddie jobson? do you love/hate adrian belew? this is to say nothing of fripp's solo work, that's for another thread.

i think we already did the "favorite KC album" thread. but nobody's going to complain if you rave about it again.

All I know is that my roommate and I, when we were sophmores in college, bought the vinyl of "Discipline" and wore out a copy in 6 months and had to get another one. Then we caught the tour ('81 or '82) at the Austin Opry House, where we stood right in front of Tony Levin for the whole show and it totally knocked us out. One of the best shows I've ever seen. The crowd went wild. I remember there was some guy in a loincloth, with glow body paint all over him and a scraggly beard, sitting in the middle of the floor before the show, in the lotus position, buring insence under a little pyramid he'd made with straws from the bar.......

I am totally stuck on the "Middle Period" KC. Larks Tongue's, Starless, Red and there is a really kick ass box set out there from this lineup that is tha' shizznett. Wake of Poseidon and Lizard are pretty cool too. I find the later period stuff kind of hackneyed (I have almost gotten into fistfights for saying this though).

well, they really appeal to different tastes....i like some of both. i think my all-time favorite KC album, and you all know how hard it is to come up with THAT, is probably USA (Live) - NOT to be found anywhere on YouTube, far as i can tell.

Has that actually been released as a CD in the states? I actually remember the album from so many years ago. There is another live album by the Mahavishnu Orchestra that was made in Central Park at the same event. Oh, to have been there in 74.......

Well that would beg the question.....Is this a Prog or Fusion thread?

I think mahavishnu forever blurred the lines between fusion and prog.

Yeah they really did...at least on their earlier recordings.....I REALLY like McLaughlin's work on the Miles Davis records as the playing is so "economic" and ensemble oriented.

I've never heard Mahavishnu Orchestra. Can anyone recommend a particular album for me to check out samples of on Amazon.com, or a link or links to some representative songs?

Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire (my personal fave), or Live are the main ones that I know of. You can't go wrong with any of them though....There was an earlier one called Apocalypse that I really know nothing about. If you like those you may find yourself looking for another project of Mclaughlin's called Shakti that featured Indian musicians and was pretty cool as well.
