I just listened to Rick Wakeman's Excerpts from "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (Live) on Yessongs, for the first time in probably 10-15 years. I have goosebumps on the goosebumps on my goosebumps. I had the album on vinyl, and that was the only song I ever listened to. (I'm not really a fan of live music, for the most part. I prefer the high production value of studio recordings.)
I love iTunes Store. :)
And speaking of iTunes Store and Yes, iTunes Store currently has the entire Relayer album, remastered, available for purchase for only $2.97. If you don't have it in your collection, now would be a really good time.

Fri, February 1, 2008 - 9:38 AMI wish to God that I had a better understanding of how the hell to do torrent stuff. It's like it's a big mystery that no one will explain with a secret code that no one will reveal that you have to know in order to be able to use it.
Would anyone care to explain to me how to deal with torrents? -

Re:layer
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 9:44 AMHmm....where are you having the problem, Enrika? I just downloaded Utorrent 1.7.7, from there, i do a search on the band I want, and then look for the one with the most people on it. I can download an album in a few minutes, or better yet, a whole discography in a matter of hours. I don't know the finer points of working with Utorrent, but I have quite a collection just using this. Let me know if i can be of more help. Oh, another tip, look for mp3 files instead of flac files. They are alot easier to run. -

Re:layer
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 10:22 AMWell, I just went to Utorrent's site and they have "A beginner's guide to BitTorrent," so perhaps that's where I should start. It all seems very mysterious and complicated. Perhaps this will clear things up.
Thanks so much for your help, and your offer of future help. I may take you up on it. :)

Re:layer
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 1:04 PMBut as Nixon once said "That would be wrong..."
I think it is fine to sample an artists works, but not to obtain their whole catalog without paying. I downloaded a few Porcupine Tree tunes and that worked well for PT because since then I've bought most of their CDs. I might not have bought the CDs or attended their concerts if I hadn't downloaded the four MP3s.
Another consideration is that somethings are just too difficult to find except through bit torrent.
Anyway, to each their own.

Re:layer
Fri, February 1, 2008 - 1:13 PMOh, yeah, I'm all for buying the albums, and even the individual songs that I want. I think there are only two songs in my entire library that I didn't pay for, but it was only because they're too obscure and simply weren't available anywhere for purchase. Like you said, there *are* things that you just can't get any other way. -

Re:layer
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 7:55 AMfor me, as far as checking out CDs from the library and ripping them, especially the Yes ones - i figure i have bought so very many of their CDs and had them stolen from me by various miscreants [NEVER bring your CDs to work, i tell you! NEVER!] that my karma isn't injured by copying one that's owned by the city of seattle.
it has been a little while since i've bought a new CD. i have, however, purchased full price an "available by download only" album by, uh, somebody or other.....can't remember just now. too old. -

Re:layer
Sat, February 2, 2008 - 12:26 PMTrue that. And just think of how you have paid for many copies of some classics. I can't even count the number of copies of "In the Court of the Crimson King" or "Dark Side of the Moon" I've purchased. So if my current copy gets scratched, I will not lose sleep over copying from someone else. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Re: Excerpts from "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (Live)
Fri, February 8, 2008 - 10:02 PMYou had Yessongs on vinyl and the only track you ever played from it was the six wives excerpt? Wow. That's very ........interesting. ANyway, have you ever heard the full album version of Six Wives? YOu should listen to the whole thing and not just the excerpt thingy. It's a very cool instrumental album. I like it a lot. -

Re: Excerpts from "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (Live)
Sun, February 10, 2008 - 9:51 PMActually, I did end up buying Six Wives on CD several years ago, but only felt inspired to listen to it once or twice. I don't really know why, except that I found it vaguely disappointing. I'd like to go back and listen to it right now, but at the moment the CD is buried in a pile of boxes in a storage unit in a different state.
"You had Yessongs on vinyl and the only track you ever played from it was the six wives excerpt? Wow. That's very ........interesting."
Well, I did listen to the whole thing at least once, maybe twice. Same with Focus's live album. I just can't see listening to something live when there's a studio recording of the same. The studio versions are nearly always better than the live versions, IMO. Frampton Comes Alive is one of the very few exceptions. -

Re: Excerpts from "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (Live)
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 9:37 PMWell if you actually listened to the live versions on Yessongs(more than once or twice)you would soon realize that the live versions are much different(not necessarily better just different). They improvise a lot on them and do things on those live versions that you won't hear on the studio versions. That album is pretty well known for that. Maybe it's time you rediscovered it just to see what I mean. You just might be surprised. Don't take my word for it though take your ears word for it. ;)

Re: Excerpts from "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" (Live)
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 6:58 AMThat was my favorite track from Yessongs as well; it always made me so high. Well, many Yes songs made me high, but that's a particular fave. I need to get that album again!
Wakeman was my music ghod in jr. high & high school. The music, the long hair, even the cape. I wanted to be him. Did wind up playing keyboards in my brother's lame band, but never wore a cape, though.
And like you, I found the whole 6th Wives a little disappointing. I think Wakeman did a great job of choosing the excerpts to make it a complete and concise piece; the full-length version wanders around a bit.
