Moving. That would be the radox trait I would assign to last night's Genesis concert at the HP Pavillion in San Jose, Ca.
Madame Bovary & I had plumped for the $245.00 seats in section 116. It was well worth the expense. We had a oblique shot of the stage. I was looking over Chester's right shoulder the entire night, & had an excellent view of Phil at his kit.
I only saw Genesis once before at the ass end of Oakland coliseum for the We Can't Dance Tour. This was much, much better.
Many of you are pretty jaded about the band after 77. Some even start earlier. I'm not one of you. I appreciate the various stages of this band's music & history and swallow it whole, even with Hold on My Heart. (I cough that one up later).
The details. The sound was perfect. The lighting was perfect & indoor fireworks were unexpected and insanely cool. The stage setup was futuristic and very classy. And the Drums.....oh god the drums.
Daryl's guitar on Firth of Fifth was magnificent. Mike & Tony were solid. Phil owned the night.
Some highlights: Phil's older, more grizzled face looked so much more menacing during the yellow lit closeup in Mama than you could believe. He looked positively demonic.
The drum duet leading into Los Endos was worth the price of admission.
I would've liked the opening Behind the Lines/Duke's Travels piece to have been longer, but was still happy to hear it live.
In the Cage/Cinema Show/Afterglow was fuckin' rad.
I would've preferred dropping Hold on my Fart from the set list and played the full version of Firth of Fifth.
The Drum duet was worth the price of admission. Oh, yeah, I didn't stutter....
Domino kicked ass, as did Home by the Sea.
It was cool to hear Ripples & Follow You Follow Me.
All told, a fantastic show. But I will tell you this: I fuckin' cried during the last song. Yeah, I'm not ashamed to say it. Hearing the Carpet Crawlers live moved me to tears. Madame Bovary & I discovered Lamb at about the same time just over a year ago. "You gotta get in to get out" has been our personal mantra as we have forged ahead together through the stress of this past year. So hearing it pulled an emotional cork in me and out came the rain.
It was also the swan song of one of the greatest bands in human history. I don't personally believe we'll see another tour/album or whatever. So Carpet Crawlers hit me right between the eyes.
So if you're a tough guy who can't stand anything they did after Duke, well, you should'a seen em anyway.
If you love the whole scope of your best band, then you need to see this concert.
Ripples never come back...

Yay! I'm glad you enjoyed the show buddy.
In fact, it's quite reassuring to hear that one of my fave bands (even in the current manifestation) can still move the audience to whatever reaction. Tears are good. Joy is awesome. Yay!
Thanks for the report.
Prog on bro!
