There are quite a few things being released from the Gong vault, but I'm not sure too much is going on that's current. Still, there is a TON of Gong out there to get, and most of it is pretty good. Check out: Planet Gong--Floating Anarchy Live '77....."Opium for the People" will really surprise you....not a hint of "teapot whimsy" in that one :-)

I had a friend who had a vinyl copy of Floating Anarchy back around 1980....good stuff....I just picked up a DVD by Gong called "Monserrat 1973 and other stories....a mixed bag really....some great stuff with Hillage (10, maybe 15 minutes worth) and a couple of excerpts of other live Gong footage but there is a quite large quantity of Daevid Allen "performance artist" nonsense as well which pretty much puts the disc in "hardcore fans only" territory. I really wish there was good footage of early Gong (or even the Pierre Moerlin "mid period") and Soft Machine available.

Not sure. Hatfield and the North performed at Nearfest for the pre-show a couple of years back. Their drummer Pip Pyle passed away sometime early last year unfortunately so I'm sure that must have put a damper on things.

Gong I belive is still around in one shape of form or another. A google search should be able to tell you better than I can.

Thanks for the info., guys. I was also trying to remember the drummer who played with John Mclaughlin on "Birds of FIre" and the album with the flutist on the cover.

This is just a guess, but I believe the drummer on Birds of Fire was Billy Cobham.

The drummer on Bird's of fire was indeed Billy Cobham. I'm pretty sure he played on their first album but after BOF I can't tell you. Their whole lineup seemed to have changed a bit after that. They even had Jean Luc Ponty at one point.

billy cobham is absolutely incredible. if you listen to the newly released live recordings of mahavishnu orchestra on wolfgang's vault website they really stretched out and cobham is just phenomenal on those! No drummer could replace him in that group. billy bruford cites mahavishnu's inner mounting flame as his favorite record! narada waden was okay too but no billy cobham that boy was a sick boy on the drums back then.

i love old hatfeild and the north and national health is wonderful. There is a more recent from dirk (mont) campbell called music from a round tower that is a long foray into some interesting ethnic sounds colage a very relaxing and beautiful cd. gong i liked with pierre moerlen and holdsworth gazeuse.
