Tue, September 18, 2007 - 6:00 PMjeez, back in the day it was all about trying to get people to STOP listening to Rush... -

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Tue, September 18, 2007 - 7:24 PM*laughing*
I have a friend who doesn't like Rush because he thinks all Rush fans are snooty.
However, he says he loves me and has sex with me at every available opportunity, and yet I'm a Rush fan.
So we can't be *too* snooty, now, can we? ;) -

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Wed, September 19, 2007 - 4:54 PMI like really old Rush....I could still listen to Caress of Steel, Fly by Night, Hemispheres or Farewell to Kings......I really hated their 80s output. I would never refuse sex with a woman just because she was a RUSH fan....as a matter of fact, I might even pretend to like the later Rush stuff in hopes of having sex. -

Wed, September 19, 2007 - 9:21 PM"I really hated their 80s output."
Ditto. I had similar problems with Yes and Queen. It was (and still is) like someone plunging a knife into my heart.
Oh, and Genesis, although it wasn't until the last couple of years that I had ever heard any of their good 70s stuff. My head nearly exploded when I heard Foxtrot. I thought they just popped out of the vagina singing Abacab.
Why the hell do they all have to fuck it up? -

Never mind, I already know the answer. Pedestrian taste among the norms; lowest common denominator; etc.

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 1:53 AMyou....you didn't know of "the lamb lies down on broadway"????
enrikaaaaaa!!!!
i know everybody hates on 80's rush, but i didn't even like rush until i heard "power windows", especially "the big money". the riff on that song is monstrous. then i went back and realized their old stuff wasn't as bad as i thought. i think when i was younger i thought anything that wasn't Yes sucked. i even remember hating led zeppelin for writing "achilles' last stand" because i thought it was a Yes-ripoff. [john paul jones is totally trying to sound like chris squire on that song though.]
even though i generally hate phil collins post-"Lamb" with a passion, i do like "Duke". i even like one or two songs off of "trick of the tail". -

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 2:03 AM"you....you didn't know of "the lamb lies down on broadway"????"
Actually, I did know of that particular song (not the album), and I loved it, but for a very long time I had no idea it was Genesis, not until a long time after all their 80s stuff came out, and when I did find out, I assumed it was, like, one of the first songs they ever did, and had no clue who Peter Gabriel was. Like I said, it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I had ever heard any of their old stuff (except, of course, for that song, which is more like new-old).
I swear, if it wasn't for the internet, I'd still be living in the prog rock dark ages. I can't tell you how much music I've discovered via the internet, old for most of you, but new for me. The last few years have been fan-frigging-tastic. :) -

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 9:35 AMi have to add to this thread, especially the original post.
i saw rush i dayton, ohio back in i think 1982.
we were all cranked up on some sort of speed.
it was the loudest rock show i had ever seen to date and being under the influence of illegal narcotics did not help. my ears rang and ached for two days. i swore never to see another concert and do speed at the same time again.
BTW, i am just a little bit older now and don't use any drugs anymore 'cept for the "green stuff".

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sat, September 22, 2007 - 3:23 PMI think Emo has some artistic merit. So do most genres. None of those genres of rock hold a candle to prog though. My youngest son was Emo for a while then switched to 80's punk. Stuff like Dead Kennedys and Bad Religion. I can appreciate the artistic merit of that music too. Although I argue with him about the Sex Pistols. They were just crap with marketing. I told him about the time I walked out of an AC/DC concert after two songs. I came to hear the opening act. He can't believe I did that. I tried to explain to him the vast difference in talent and quality between AC/DC and their opening act...
King Crimson.
He doesn't get it. -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 1:59 AMwell, i like the DKs, bad religion, the sex pistols, ac/dc AND king crimson. i even like sunny day real estate.
but i can't stand those scrawny eyeliner bands out now. robert smith and ian curtis destroy all that stuff like a death ray.
it's just all the overproduction plus whiny vocals plus hot topic outfits- and the songs are all written by some pop producer in LA. they all sound like they're finely crafted to fit into clear channel radio formats. i think if a record company or radio executive today were to hear husker du they'd drop dead on the spot.
it's just different times. in the 2010's we'll look back fondly on all these bands that sucked and mock them while other people go "whoa! i forgot that band even existed!"

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 12:50 PMawesome ! not really a fan of Rush...I've stated why before... but hell, anything to get these kids away from "EMO". I'm not one to ever mock anyone's music.... but this crap has put me over the edge. -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 12:54 PMCan someone provide a link to an example of this musical phenomenon? Is this the same sort of thing as the Cure, Depeche Mode, and Sisters of Mercy I used to listen to? -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 1:27 PMOH NOOO. you definetly cannot place The Cure in the slot of "emo". omg. definitely not. as for the other two, i don't know. never really listened to much. The Cure has way more introspectiveness and creativity and all around coolness than any of these emo-clowns could ever even dream of having ! I think emo is like refusing a hot one night stand and then whineing to that person that you can't get laid, meanwhile you're masturbating in the bar's bathroom........ it's a complete refusal to take control and self perpetuated pity... i'm sure you've met people like this. As my friend puts it " I'm gonna go cut myself, and my bangs " . It's an exploitation of emotions. Anyone who really feels the way of which these bands are trying to portray, would (a) not be singing about it in this manner and )b) would really off themselves if they did. But hey. that's just my opinion. -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 2:31 PMI wouldn't be so harsh on emo, you'll make them cry! ;-) Seriously though, I think emo is a step up from most pop. At least it has sometimes genuine emotion, even if it is mostly self-absorbed and whiney. The genre could mature. -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 8:48 PMI think the hard definition of EMO is EMO PUNK. Fugazi was supposedly the original example (but they were actually good). When most people discuss EMO these days (I am referring to my 12 year old daughter....she would know) they are talking about Green Day, Blink 182, Fenix TX, Fall Out Boy (my daughter says they are wannabes), My Chemical Romance, and HIM. Does this help? Still wanna check it out? -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 8:52 PM"Does this help?"
Well, I heard a bit of Green Day a while back. But I actually kind of liked it. :)
But I think that gives me an idea, yeah. Thanks. :)

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Sun, October 7, 2007 - 11:07 PMgreen day is emo? -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 6:53 AMI thought Green Day was pop punk. Jimmy Eat World and Dashboard Confessional are recent examples of emo, also Weezer. My son was into Weezer and Jimmy Eat World for a while. According to Wikipedia the genre started in the 80's as a derivative of punk. Not all post-punk pop is emo. I guess it needs to be whiney and juvenile to be emo. -
-
Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 7:24 PMThere are PLENTY of whiny Green Day songs....the fact that they wear eyeliner and dye their hair black throws them into the same category (this is, of course, according to my daughter). They aren't really TOO different from the other bands you mentioned either.....you know, whiney, punky edge that has been polished to a Vanilla, Pro Tools sheen.....I don't know if you have heard the saying about Pro Tools (pretty much the industry standard for Digital Recording Platforms):
"Pro Tools: Killing music....One record at a time."
Aw shit, I'll step off the soapbox now.

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock
Mon, October 8, 2007 - 8:51 PMI liked Weezer's Buddy Holly song. It was cute. :) I don't think I know anything else by them. -

Re: Ridding the world of EMOs with Prog Rock

Phil drummed for Genesis for years before Brand X.
Brand X was a side project for Phil in the late 70's. -
